If you’re a workplace Safety Manager, Safety Specialist, or safety enthusiast looking to move up and earn a higher salary by creating a solid program while establishing yourself as the subject matter expert...

..then you probably already know that you need a strong foundation of safety policies combined with safe work behaviors and topped off with management support to properly run a safety department and build that track record of results.

So I’m going to spare you that spiel.

There’s no need to drone on and on about how management support is essential to the success of a safety program and you have to get your employees to follow the safety rules when I'm preaching to the choir.

After all, you probably already KNOW that everyone, including employees, taking responsibility for safety is a key tipping point that will allow you to make greater strides in improving safety behaviors and reaching that elusive goal of zero incidents.

You’ve probably heard that behavior-based safety programs cut accidents and injuries 29-72% over time through systematic processes, of course, when implemented correctly. (source: American Psychology Association, apa.org)

Here's what you

MIGHT NOT KNOW

Even if you’re lucky enough to have all your policies and programs in place or if your company invested in done-for-you services (lucky you)...creating a program centered around management support and employee involvement can:

ELEVATE YOUR SAFETY LEADER POSITION WITHIN THE COMPANY

You have a seat at the table.  When executive meetings are called, you're always included because it's well understood that everything they do affects safety and safety adds value and profits to the company’s bottom line.

EASILY RAISE AWARENESS OF THE IMPACT SAFETY HAS ON THE COMPANY

The idea of “safety is a core value” or “think safety first”, is no longer a pie-in-the-sky wish, but the way business is done.  Through all levels, safety is at the forefront of every worker's mind.

BUILD PROMINENCE FOR SAFETY IN ALL BUSINESS DECISIONS

When new products are designed, machinery purchased, or processes changed, you're involved in every stage of the decision making from conception to implementation to training.  Gone are the days that you walk into work and are faced with fixing the machine guarding or chemical hazards after the fact.

FREE UP YOUR TIME TO WORK ON WHAT YOU DO BEST

Imagine never having to facilitate every safety meeting because your front line supervisors have the knowledge, ability, and gusto to do it themselves, leaving you time to focus on moving the program forward.

CERTAINLY, MAKE YOU THE AUTHORITY FOR BEST BUSINESS PRACTICES

Departments will come to you and ask how they can improve their processes.  You'll no longer be begging for them to try a safety method, they'll be begging you to help them.

Safety is More Than Regulations? OK.

But what do you mean by that?

When you took on the role of Safety Manager, or when you started your college courses, the very first thing you learned was - there are safety laws that the company needs to follow.

You were told that you had to follow rules from OSHA, DOT, EPA, RMP.  The acronyms had your head spinning.

But wait, there's more…

...you have to manage injuries, train new employees, and keep costs down.

So you set to work, learning all you can about the various things you were “supposed to do.”  The things that you were told the job was about.  And the pile of reg books grew along with the endless confusion and no clear direction.

When does this rule apply? What does that term mean?  How does this report get filed?

You start attending workshops, seminars, joining social media groups.  You took tons of notes, maybe you even started to develop a plan to organize all the things you were responsible for.  (I get it, I love a great Gantt chart)

You started to create a vision for your safety program.  You start to imagine what it will look like when you have all your policies in place and your meeting those frustratingly detailed regulations.

And the more you learn about what you're “supposed to be doing” the longer your to-do list gets.  The next thing you know, you find yourself responsible for all of it and too busy to do any of it.  (honestly, no one’s shoulders are big enough)

But you’re missing a key element to safety management.  The people.

Your success is dependent on the behaviors and actions of the employees and managers.  You need to know how to influence people.  How to sell your ideas to people.  How to get them on your side. (they didn’t teach that part in that seminar, did they?)

And this is where the frustration starts.  You put out a policy no one follows.  Managers aren't holding their people accountable.  And your company is at a greater risk.

You feel like no one cares (but you), no one’s paying attention (so why do it), and it doesn’t matter (as long as the costs aren’t too high).  You keep your head down and stay out of trouble.

Even with the best intentions in the beginning, many Safety Managers abandon their plans, file away their notes, and stop trying.

AND THAT’S WHERE WOULD-BE WORLD-CLASS SAFETY PROGRAMS DIE.

Here’s why most budding safety leaders abandon their visions...

Without a super clear step-by-step Safety Management Process that continuously involves management and employees, most would-be safety leaders get lost. They fall victim to the paralyzing distractions of what’s being thrown at them at the moment.

Claims, inspections, training, and all the other moving parts of a safety program are pulling them in every direction but forward.

They start to believe the same thing as the management team believes - that safety tasks are safety’s responsibility.

Let me get something out now and I'll work on improving it later,” is a daily battle cry.

And instead of looking at what THEY can do to make a difference, the constant thought of “my management team will never support safety” is running through their minds.

AND HERE'S WHY THOSE THOUGHTS ARE SO CRIPPLING...

As a busy Safety Manager with more work than hours, accidents piling up, and policies left unwritten. You literally can’t afford to get off course in moving your safety program forward.

Every detour or delay costs you time, energy, company profits, and YOUR potential earnings.

The more time you spend ramming the regulations down your team's throat and lamenting how they aren’t supporting safety, the harder it is to get them on your side and make the needed behavior changes because they're getting more and more set in their ways.

Therefore, focusing on establishing a strong safety program and culture is one of the few things in your career that you need to get right, the first time.

Luckily for you, with every profit report, incident review, and manager’s meeting you have opportunities to change the communication cadence around safety.

There's still time for you to jump in, clean up the mess, educate your team, and convert the company values to include safety.

That is if you can avoid the mistakes that so many safety managers are making.

The 4 Reasons

Many Safety Managers Can't Get Their

Injury Rates to Zero

(and how to guarantee you will)

REASON #1

Using Lack of Control as a Crutch

(Or worse, accepting a lack of support and commitment as a given)

Most Safety Managers approach this role as if they're in control (their title is manager after all), without understanding the limits to their authority. The belief that what they say will be followed no matter what causes frustration when they find themselves speaking like a broken record to a room of people wearing earbuds. They'll use this lack of authority as an excuse for why accidents happen and the program is stalled. They wait for their day to say "I told you so".

You NEVER stop when they say "No". You change your tactics. No one told you this would be easy, they also didn't tell you that persuasion and campaigning were involved either.

What's amazing is that when you give up this crutch (or poor excuses - I'd say), your mind opens up to more possibilities on how to get them to say YES!

It's time to learn a different way and how to REALLY get people to change their minds, beliefs, and behaviors.

REASON #2

Too Focused on Regulations

(It seems legit, right?)

It seems reasonable that the main focus for any safety department would be regulatory compliance. The problem is that safety regulations are the bare minimum and it will NEVER get you to zero.

Putting most of your focus on the minimums actually slows down and cripples your efforts towards improvement.

But when you turn your focus towards what your team's goals are and what your employees want to see improved, you not only make greater strides in your safety program, but you meet regulations at the same time.

There are very simple steps that will help you achieve BOTH of these goals.

REASON #3

Lack of In-Depth Data Analysis

(Also, not having enough leading indicators)

What gets measured gets managed, but the easiest things to measure in safety are the accidents. By that point, it's too late. Figuring out a way to measure and record leading indicators has ALWAYS been a sticking point for even the best Safety Managers.

When you have precise hazard assessments and behavior analysis, you can easily identify what behaviors can cause injuries. Throw this data into some software and out pops your next safety initiative.

Stop looking at the surface level, to get to zero it's the tiny details in behavior that put the odds in your favor.

REASON #4

Surface Level Collaboration

(if you have any collaboration at all)

You've seen it right? You get an employee safety committee together but it ends up being the Safety Manager show. Or at a manager's meeting where you give your trend analysis to a room of blank faces.

Real collaboration starts when you have solid relationships with your employees and you step back from solving all the problems yourself. When people feel like you're listening to them, they'll speak.

You have to be open to the ideas of your coworkers, even the bad ones because the BEST safety programs will always fail if they're not created through a team effort.

Shhh . . . I'm going to let you in on a

Even though safety management is an ESSENTIAL and quickly growing profession - it’s not always seen as a job that requires training.

Many companies appoint people to the position and expect them to figure it out on their own. They become scapegoats when things go wrong.

A few people will develop the skills to make a REAL IMPACT, while many others fizzle out. Some will go for their degrees and learn the regulations, but then fail at applying them in the real world.

And the main reason for this, as you've likely seen by now, is that the barriers to entry are relatively LOW…

...but, the barriers towards EFFECTIVE EXECUTION are fairly high. The training just isn't out there. And they've been stuck learning as they go.

But as long as you can avoid the biggest blunders that sink most would-be safety leaders. The path is paved for you. Your world-class Safety Management Program is achievable.

One where you have everything covered. You know what to do and how to do it. And, you're not the only one preaching safety, but it's a team effort and everyone is reaching for ZERO.

The key ingredient for all this is having a process to keep the whole thing running smoothly while engaging all areas of your company in safety.

And with your permission, that’s what I would love to show you how to create...

Introducing...

The Complete A-Z Safety Management Implementation Plan for Confidently Managing Your Safety Program with multiple processes to ensure that all your bases are covered. From Compliance, to Behaviors, to Management Support and Employee Involvement.

I've taken everything I've learned from training hundreds of Safety Managers, working in over 15 different industries, being an SGE with OSHA, and mentoring over 20 VPP applicants. It's all channeled into a comprehensive, step-by-step implementation program that not only teaches you the high-level theory but the actual EXECUTION of how you can do the same.

SAFETY MANAGEMENT ACADEMY IS MORE THAN JUST A TRAINING PROGRAM, IT'S A

ROAD MAP TO SAFETY SUCCESS

Yes, you'll learn the strategies behind everything you do, but more importantly, you'll have a step-by-step plan that leaves nothing out and takes nothing for granted as you implement it.

THE END RESULT: An outright world-class level safety program with complete management support and employee engagement, that you'll be able to recreate at whatever company you're working for. Giving you a track record of results to brag about as you climb your career ladder.

is the only program of its kind that...

COMBINES BOTH THE NITTY GRITTY WITH THE SAFETY CULTURE

Yes! You'll learn all the ins and outs of running a workplace safety program like a pro, but instead of waiting until all your ducks are in a row, we'll start seeding safety culture into your program during the early stages and avoid all the headaches down the road.

IS BUILT WITH YOUR CAREER ADVANCEMENT IN MIND

Safety Managers deserve a seat in the executive suite, our impact on the company is that valuable! So stop sitting at the kiddie table and earn your seat with the BIG BOYS. The skills you'll learn can propel your career forward.

FOCUSES ON CREATING SAFETY AWARENESS THROUGH TEAMWORK

You know that mantra "Safety is EVERYONE's Responsibility", SMA takes that to the next level. Not only will you be able to hand safety tasks off to other team members, but they'll want to take them on. When your safety program jumps to this level, safety awareness seems to ooze from everywhere.

FREES UP YOUR TIME SO YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU DO BEST

Stopping incidents from happening (in case you weren't sure). All those days and nights of overwhelm are coming to an end. When you're no longer the only person who can handle safety issues, your calendar can get some relief. I can't wait for the first time a front line supervisor comes to you with an issue, just to keep you in the loop because they've already handled it.

TEACHES YOU HOW TO COMMUNICATE THE VALUE OF SAFETY TO THE DECISION MAKERS

The reason you're having trouble getting your management team to get on board with safety is that you're speaking a different language that they don't understand. So let's spotlight all the value you bring to the table and be clear about why it's imperative to THEIR success that you're included.

So, if you're FINALLY ready to step into the role of a SAFETY LEADER and to manage your safety program like the pros...

 MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Brye Sargent, CSP

Sometimes referred to as the Wonder Woman of safety. After ditching the safety police hat long ago, I've seen more success by working alongside management and collaborating with employees, then EVER doing it all myself. Or by being a drill sergeant to get the message through.

25+ years as a safety professional and working in 15 different industries has taught me to pay attention more to marketing and psychology to really make an impact for my employers and workers. And that's why I pursued my degree in psychology and became a certified coach specializing in Leadership and Achievement.

My passion for safety took me, and the companies I worked with, all the way to VPP. I've mentored over 20 facilities reaching for that STAR status. I was honored to be an SGE and assist OSHA with on-site inspections.

After personally training over 500 Safety Managers, I have seen a common thread that is holding so many back; both those entering the field and those stuck on a plateau. That's what Safety Management Academy addresses.

Invest In Myself

Being new to safety, your podcast as well as the tools you recently shared with me are very much appreciated. I truly enjoy listening to your podcasts. I am very familiar with my company's operations and
structure, I have reasonable support from my management team, but no formal
training or experience in a safety role. So, listening to your thoughts, recommendations, and experiences has my mind turning in a hundred directions and has me excited for my new role.

I just wanted to say thanks and let you know that what you are doing, and sharing your knowledge is appreciated. I plan to invest in myself! Please continue doing what you do and I will soak in all that I can.

The video was totally worth watching every second. It was very helpful and I actually watched it twice.

Thanks so much and continue making the impact that you do!

You helped Me Start My Safety Career

Your ideas for empowering team members in the safety committee really stuck with me and it was the first thing I implemented at my previous job. It raised team member morale because they felt more involved and respected, and it made me happy knowing team members had a place they could freely voice their opinion on anything safety related to start an open conversation. This was single handedly the most important part of establishing a good relationship between me and the production team members. Once they realized we were on the same team, we were able to make a lot of process improvements.

The information in you shared helped me get the job at my current company and I’m sure it’ll help me get my next job.

You Inspire Me

I attended the Women in Safety Conference at Keene State and I was very inspired by you! Your message of perseverance was something I needed to here. I struggle with imposter syndrome and I also have an unconventional start to safety.

I worked for about 2 years for an Industrial Hygiene Consulting firm.  In March, I began working as an EHS Coordinator and I love it. I have learned so much.

My end goal is to become a safety manager. I’ve been also listening to your podcast on my drive home from work. It has inspired me to take the next step and get my Master’s. I just wanted to thank you for making your tools accessible. I can’t wait to learn more from you.

Thank you,

You Help Me Support My Family

Thank you again for this community you have built and the academy you started. I would not have a clue about what I am doing without your help.

The work you did help me support my family and I am forever grateful.

Pharmacutical

Human Touch to Safety

Safety Brye is not only an influencer, but has real experiences she can draw on to tell a story that reinforces a topic. Any topic covered has takeaways, some more than others depending on your point in your career, or current role.

"Wins" that I have seen recently include:
Fall Protection Systems - Ironworkers rely on their fall pro harness, attach points, and retractables. Giving demonstrations, checklists, taking the time to show them how to inspect their equipment has led to them inspecting before use, and actually asking me questions on things they think might be wrong!! WIN.

Second biggest measurable win was our Work Comp rates and figures. This year alone a savings of 34% was achieved, and incident #'s also decreased 25%.

Safety Geek is a program that actually has the human touch element that goes along way.

YOU DON'T NEED A COLLEGE DEGREE TO BE AN OUTSTANDING SAFETY LEADER, BUT YOU DO NEED TRAINING.

(without proper training, it will take 5 years to reach your earning potential)

  • Working with a coach regularly can cost as much as $10,000 a year
  • Hiring a consultant to work with costs about $1,500 a day + travel.
  • The average cost of one class at any university for a safety degree is about $600 + books.
  • A 6-hour class at an OSHA OTI center or similar runs about $350 and a multi-day class is upwards of $1,000.
  • The time it could take you to learn this from free resources is about 5 years, with lots of trial and error.

PUTTING OFF MASTERING THE STRATEGIES OF SAFETY MANAGEMENT CAN COST YOU IN TIME, PERFORMANCE RAISES, OR A PROMOTION

(that could be about $20K a year)

So, YES, you can 100% piecemeal everything that is offered in The Safety Management Academy program. But, if you haven't done it yet, will you take the time to do it all over this next year?

Or wouldn't you rather have a plan and strategy laid out for you?

Over the last several years, I've trained and worked with 100's of Safety Managers. The five-year timeline is not pulled out of the sky, it is based on my experience in 15+ different industries. Without training, and not just regulations training, it takes YEARS to learn how to be effective and to get results that are more than just easy pickin's off the safety trees.

The ones that decide they can "DIY" it stay stuck where they are. And spend most of their careers getting the foundation in place and running out of time to reach that career goal they dreamed of.

This means if you never get this figured out, you'll never go on to make the salary you deserve...which means you will never be able to choose the company you work for and have to accept whatever offers fall your way.

It's for this reason that I created Safety Management Academy. I want to make sure that you get access to the information and training you need to reach your career goals.

Safety Management Academy is unlike any other professional training out there. It's not some one-day checkmark class from an instructor you never see again or can't chat with when you're trying to apply their training in your real-world situation. And it's NOT some large lobbying group that only sees you as a number and is not invested in your personal success.

Safety Management Academy is a small investment in yourself that pays huge dividends in your future.

(and gives you the shortcut to success)

One that will pay you back for the rest of your life. By letting you make a difference in the world (superhero of the workplace as I like to say)...with the proven strategies & processes to build a track record that any organization will find valuable.

It's a transformation that frees you from the employee mindset that's keeping you stuck and struggling. And lets you become the Respected Safety Executive in your company.

And when you weigh all that against the investment and what it will do for you and your future, then it's an easy choice.

So tell me...are you in?

SAFETY MANAGEMENT ACADEMY is perfect for you if . . .

  • You're just getting started in the safety profession and you want to NAIL IT right out of the gate by using the most powerful, "easy to follow" strategies to boost your success.
  • You've been at it for a few years and keep hitting the same sticking point, every quarter you're trying something new, but it's making little difference, so you're searching for that magic piece that having a step-by-step plan can give you.
  • You feel like your program is on repeat. You find a problem, fix it, only to find that it's still a problem 3 months later, so then you start over again. Nothing you're doing seems to be taking hold or permanently changing behaviors.
  • You like to follow a plan and see how it all plays out, you're a rule follower and can't walk away from a fancy spreadsheet or a finely designed PowerPoint. Your eye for detail is what sets you apart.
  • You have no problem investing a couple of hours a week as long as you know that every bit of energy you invest is a strategic and meaningful step towards moving your career forward and doing a more effective job.

You're ready to start managing your program like a pro if . . .

  • In fact, you already invest 2+ hours a week researching the latest safety management updates and have all your favorite sites bookmarked. Those aren't spam emails you're reading, there are nuggets of valuable information in each one, and you're like a miner trying to take in everything you can.
  • You wish the people you worked with saw safety the same way you do. Even though you work for, and with, good people, you also feel like they could be doing more to support safety. Every time you bring it up, they agree, but either nothing happens or it's never a priority.
  • You're aware of the possibility of a true safety culture within an organization, maybe you even took a tour of a facility that had one, but your company can't get past the minimum regulations to see the big picture of what's possible.
  • You're DONE sitting on the sidelines watching others take the spotlight, getting invited to speak at your regional networking group, or winning the awards at last conferences; you're ready to get the recognition for the work you're doing.
  • You're ready to take your seat at the big table and create a detailed safety improvement action plan that doesn't include just your name in the responsibility section, knowing that this will be the first of many as you work every day to make continuous improvements in your safety program and celebrate every step towards zero.

IF YOU SAID "YES" TO 6 OUT 10 POINTS ABOVE,

I can't wait to meet you inside  SAFETY MANAGEMENT ACADEMY!

IT'S TIME TO GET OFF THE FENCE

If you read this far then you're clearly thinking hard about it. There's power in making a decision. Even if that decision is a "No."

It's the indecisiveness that causes stress and stalls progress.

Here's a tip: the question I always ask myself when I'm in a situation like this is:

"1, 3, or 6 months from now - WILL I REGRET NOT DOING IT?"

If the answer is anything other than a solid "NO", then I'm all in.

Remember - I've got your back

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I would love to help you move your program as well as your career forward.
